As many of you know, we were blessed to receive $400,000 worth of equipment donated by American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) under the United States Agency for International Development (USAID, US government) via a grant from Himalayan Cataract Project with John.\u00a0 This has enabled us to open vitreoretinal surgery in our clinic recently which has contributed to our clinic\u2019s revenue being sufficient to support our costs (a very important milestone reached about a year later than it would have been reached without COVID-19).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By God\u2019s grace John subsequently has received a ~$516,000 second ASHA grant through Massachusetts Eye and Ear that will develop cornea subspecialty services, optometry, outreach equipment, needed operating room and clinic equipment and also an outstanding anatomy teaching device for the MyungSung Medical School.\u00a0 Please pray that we will succeed in implementing the purchasing, shipping and customs clearance; we expect that to go okay, but there often are surprises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After three years’ effort, John and his team were able to launch the “FLAME Trial” a week ago Thursday, and so far it seems to be going well. We hypothesize\/hope that outcome of this Trial will lead to about 30% better outcomes of trachoma surgery and improve outcomes worldwide, though of course things don’t always work out as hoped. This particular problem greatly affects rural Ethiopian women and children who do not have access to clean water and tugs a lot on our hearts. There is huge complexity in implementing this huge clinical trial involving three countries (funded by the US National Institutes of Health). I give thanks that we have reached this point, which seems like a miracle! (But that basically all our activities are working is equally a miracle, praise God!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a personal note, we are reminded that life is a gift. Two weeks ago while driving home from church, a large bus apparently hit a small yellow car we could not see, resulting in the yellow car flying backwards from the median into our lane. John swerved so that it struck us on the side instead of the front, propelling us into a parked Toyota (“I was only there for five minutes!” bemoaned the unfortunate owner). So our car is out of commission for at least a month. We are incredibly thankful that the police were very careful and fair in assessing fault, which has been our experience in the unusual number of times we have been hit in the last six years. Please pray that the insurance company will do a good job fixing it, and that it won’t be “totaled” since foreigners are no longer allowed to buy cars here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
